Best Coffee Ever

Hot Beverages in the morning are something wonderful.  Both coffee and tea are in high demand here, and recently, we have discovered a new way of making coffee.  Hitherto, we perked our coffee – haven’t owned an electric coffee maker for a decade or so.  But now, we brew our coffee cold, and it makes such an enormous difference!  All you need to do is plan ahead a little, and you will probably not go back to brewing coffee any other way.  Here’s how we do it:

Cold-Brewed Coffee

You need:

  • filtered water
  • coffee grounds
  • container with lid to mix coffee grounds and water in
  • spoon to stir


  1. Measure out water and coffee grounds.  For us, 1/2 a cup of coffee grounds on 1/2 a gallon of water works well.  If we brew a whole gallon, we use 1 1/4 cups of coffee.  Other people say to measure out the coffee at a ratio of eight to one by weight, as in 2 cups of water and 4.5 tablespoons of coffee.  Best try it out and adjust the ratio to meet your personal preferences.
  2. Mix filtered water and coffee grounds in a container and stir them to make sure water saturates all the grounds.
  3. Cover the container and let it sit at room temperature for 18 to 20 hours.
  4. Remove the grounds from the coffee by pouring the mixture through a filter, or by just pouring carefully. 
  5. Heat, or drink cold.
  6. Store your leftover decanted cold brew in the fridge for up to fourteen days (or so they say – it never lasts this long in our house!).  We decant into mason jars.
