Tolkien on the Machine

J.R.R. Tolkien, in a letter to Milton Waldman

“By the last [Machine] I intend all use of external plans and devices (apparatus) instead of development of the inherent powers or talents- or even the use of these talents with the corrupted motive of dominating:  bulldozing the real world, or coercing other wills.  The Machine is our more obvious modern form though more closely related to Magic than is usually recognized.”

~J.R.R. Tolkien, in a letter to Milton Waldman

Allow Machinery Magazine to illustrate the point with this video presentation of “Amazing” Excavator Mulchers- touted as the “Fastest Land Clearing Equipment.”

To us it’s not amazing at all, rather the use of such machinery and their destructive power is quite simply obscene.

" is a commodity to be bought or not to be bought, a luxury in which we may either indulge or stint ourselves, like any other. And there are many luxuries that we may legitimately prefer to it, such as a grateful conscience, a country life, or the woman of our inclination." ~Robert Louis Stevenson
