In 1849, Walter Savage Landor wrote this epitaph for himself on his 74th birthday.
I Strove with None
I strove with none, for none was worth my strife:
Nature I loved, and next to Nature, Art:
I warmed both hands before the fire of Life;
It sinks; and I am ready to depart.from The Last Fruit off an Old Tree
~ Walter Savage Landor (1775 – 1864)
Yes that fire ebbs and becomes glowing ashes . I’m three years older than Landor so I understand his feelings.
